For many teenagers today, music is a large part of their lives. Anthropologically speaking, music is even considered a main part of some cultures. Since music is so important, it is equally important that we determine the effect of music on our lives. Music is not amoral; there is good and bad music. However, problems and conflicts arise when one attempts to pinpoint which genres are good and which are bad. When parents or church leaders attempt to do so, without giving any logical explanation, teenagers would tend to ignore or even openly defy the advice given. As an author so succinctly stated, “Perhaps nothing seems more futile than a dispute about music” (Johnson, 10). I propose, however, that perhaps no futile dispute is needed to discern good music from the bad. All that is needed is a logical and factual reasoning that principles for choosing music can be based upon. Different genres of music such as classical and rock result in different effects on the human mind. In this essay, I will endeavor to prove that the majority of rock music will cause negative effects on its listeners, while most classical music is an example of music that will have positive effects on humans. Also, it will be shown why not all rock music is ‘bad’ and not all classical music is ‘good’. Lastly, I will introduce 3 principles of choosing good music that are based on logic and reason, because it is impossible to label one genre of music as completely bad and another as completely good.
